We plan to start our journey on August 2, 2010 on the Pacific Ocean in Bandon, Oregon. We will ride through Oregon via Glendale, Butte Falls, Rocky Point and Lakeview. We will then head south briefly into California, where we will turn east after only a few miles over Hwy. 299 to Cedarville. We will continue East to Gerlach, NV (where the Burning Man festival will be held a few days after we pass through), then south to Fernley, a few miles east of Reno. In Fernley we will take a day to rest and one of our group will need to return home. We will then head east on Hwy. 50 (the "loneliest road" in America) across Nevada eventually reaching Cedar City, UT. We will take some time there to hike in Zion National Park, then head east through Bryce Canyon National Park, the Escalantes, Capitol Reef National Park, and Natural Bridges National Monument. When we reach Colorado we will ride via Telluride, Montrose, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, and eventually reach Pueblo where we will take 4 days for Nancy to visit family, and others to recoup, have any needed repairs done on bikes, sightsee, etc.. We will have crossed the Rocky Mountains!
From Pueblo we will continue east on the Transamerica Bike Route through eastern Colorado, Kansas, and Missouri where we cross the Ozarks. We will briefly be in Illinois then cross the Ohio River into Kentucky. As we cross western Kentucky we will take time to visit some of Nancy's family, spend time in Mammoth Cave National Park, then go through Bardstown (home of Kentucky whiskey), Harrodsburg, Berea (the folk art center of the Appalachias), then cross the Appalachia/Blue Ridge Mountains into Virginia. We will wind our way east across Virginia, taking time to visit Montecello and Appotomox, until we eventually reach Williamsburg, then 15 miles further Yorktown and the Atlantic Ocean. We anticipate completing our journey around October 22, 2010.
